Key Features:

LBA was tasked with the programming, design, and construction administration for the full modernization of the existing classroom spaces, common areas, and mechanical systems of the MLK Elementary School, a 65,000 square foot three-story building located in SE Washington, DC.

LBA’s design concept addressed an ADA compliant ramp connecting the walkway to the entrance platform, replacing the entrance doors and frames with safety glazed storefronts, adding a vestibule for energy savings, a new canopy to provide weather protection to the main entrance, hide eye sores on the roof of the lobby, and make a bold statement of the main entrance to the building. Aesthetic upgrades including; cleaning masonry by pressure washing the exterior and re-pointing loose mortar joints to prevent water infiltration, replacing unsightly window security grilles, and developing a MLK mural as the focal point and welcoming feature of the lobby that leads visitors to the welcome center are a few of the additional modernizations that LBA developed. Beautifying the lobby with new flooring, ceiling and walls to brighten-up the space, and adding ADA compliant toilets in the lobby will add to the overall eye appeal of this community treasure.
