Key Features:

LBA was tasked with the programming, design, and construction administration for the full modernization of the existing classroom spaces, common areas, and mechanical systems for Burrville Elementary School, a 95,000 square foot building located in NE Washington, DC

The existing school incorporated an open space plan, and LBA created a design that partitioned spaces to reduce noise transfer and distractions. Also, because of the limited number of windows at Burrville Elementary School, LBA had to work very hard to ensure that natural light was incorporated into the majority of individual classroom spaces. Care in design has been taken to bring daylight deep into corridors by the use of glazing in classroom doors, transoms and sidelights. All partitions run from floor to structure above for appropriate fire rating/smoke partition/noise reduction, where and as necessary.

LBA’s new design for Burrville Elementary School addresses ADA compliance for all elevations. Individual classrooms are provided for pre-school classes on the 1st floor which required individual toilets and storage. An attractive and welcoming lobby has been developed for displays, exhibits, and information for the community. Safe play areas for all pre-school children were provided adjacent to their classrooms in the secure and covered area under the second floor. Flooring, ceilings and wall finishes have been changed to a more modern approach with new finishes and colors consistent with the existing design.
